My Music
By Charlie Hartwell – 1/2005

(A) I tooted first, in a Frat Bar with Old Matty (E)
Was pretty bad, but we had a keg, and he was awful (A) kind
First made money blowing on the streets of Aussie (D)
With a (A) German, laid a (E) hat down on Bondi (A)

I blew all night Christmas Eve in a church in Kenya
Only white guy, first harp they’d ever seen
I played Elvis with Fast Eddie in Arizona
First time people danced when my harp did scream

Chorus

(A) These are my friends, and (E) here is my music
Played round the earth with folks in different (A) neighborhoods
I’ll never make a living playing (D) music
But the (A) joy of bending (E) strumming, singing, (D) writing….
Well it’s soul…finger pickin’ good (A)

Break – BANJO - MANDOLIN

When I met my wife I’d never heard of bluegrass
And her Mother didn’t like my harp at all
Now I play in her Daddy’s band with Chuck and Mike and Wint and Scram
I’ve played with my two kids who I hope take up the call

Jammed with the boys from Lake Country in the backyard
With Tim and Paul, sung a hymn going door to door
I played in the Mountains late with Steve, cowboy from Texas
Played Dunn Brothers, Toluka bound with Johnny Boy

Chorus

Break - DOBRO - GUITAR

I’ve bended late at night with Ben on the Big Lake
We played Senor with Ling, Jayser and Johnny Mac
Bended blues with Gary O.B. rendered tunes with Mr. D
Played the harp in an Irish pub with Papa Jack

I’ve bended notes with Allison Krauss, she didn’t know it
She was on stage in Phoenix, playin for the folks at Martha White
I was hiding with my C harp behind a suaro
Blowin, dreamin’ that I was on stage with her that night

Chorus

These are my friends, here is our music
Played with folks I love, anywhere I could
Well I’ll never make a living playing music
But the joy of bending strumming singing writing drinking pickin jamming solos tuning fiddling sliding riffing banging
Well it’s soul….finger picking good
